Abstract

A literature review aimed at identifying theory frameworks for critical thinking (CT) to be applied to nursing training and most commonly used tools for evaluation.
Methods: a literature search was performed in databases LILACS IBECS, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Scielo, for nursing papers published in Portuguese and English, from 2005 to 2011. Keyword was critical thinking.
Results: most commonly cited frameworks for CT were those by: Facione, Watson and Glaser, and Alfaro Lefevre. Most common definitions for CT were based on cognitive skills and ethical dispositions. Tests most commonly cited to measure CT in nursing were: Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal, California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory, and California Critical Thinking Skills Test.
Conclusion: the lack of an agreed definition for CT in nursing is reflected in a low use of specific models for assessment.

Keywords:

critical thinking; nursing learning; high education in nursing
