Abstract

Purpose: to evaluate an intervention on recently integrated nurses aiming at improving their research capability.
Methods: a pre-post intervention study in a university hospital. The intervention was based on a theoretical-practical program in Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) over a five-month period. Intervention results were assessed by means of the Nursing Research Questionnaire that was developed and validated in Spain to measure research culture in nursing.
Results: when comparing research knowledge in nurses in T0 (pre-intervention data) and T2 (post-intervention data) significant differences were observed in overall score improvement (z= -4.205, p = 0.000) and in four domains in knowledge: study design (z= -6.042, p = 0.000), quantitative data analysis (z= -3.082, p = 0.002), project writing (z= -5.149, p = 0.000), and computing (z= -2.889, p = 0.004). Significant differences were also found when comparing use or research in clinical practice by nurses in T0 versus T2 (z= -2.904, p = 0.004).
Discussion/Conclusions: EBN program had a positive short-term impact on research knowledge, nurses' attitudes on research, and use of research in clinical practice.
