Abstract

Introduction: healthy and Resilient Organizations (HERO) are those making systematic, planned, and proactive efforts to improve processes and results by their employees and by the organization itself. We aimed at providing a synthesis of all basic concepts in this model in order to evaluate its potential application in the healthcare field in future works.
Methods: a systematic literature search in SCOPUS database was carried out. Both theoretical and empirical studies from 2005 to 2016 were included. Nineteen papers were found; ten out of them were selected based on full text availability.
Results: most papers had been published from 2011 to march 2016. This fact appears to be due to the search for new management models overcoming the limitations that have emerged in old models because of the economical crisis. HERO organizations are based on three related mainstays: healthy resources and organizational practices, healthy results, and healthy employees, the latter being the most relevant.
Discussion and conclusions: HERO model has been validated and implemented, but there is a gap in empirical studies on it. Moreover, samples used in such studies have been very small; resulting in an urgent need to perform more practical studies and to implement the model at a larger scale within health organizations.
