Abstract

Introduction: in Mexico, testicular cancer accounts for 2% of all neoplasms in men, and is the most common one in men aged 15 to 35. More than 95% of such tumors have a germ cell origin, whereas 5% are gonadal stromal tumors (Sertoli cells, Leyding cells, sexual cords), as well as collecting duct sarcomas, surrounding connective tissue tumors, and others. In 2001, the Malignant Neoplasms Histopathological Registry recorded 1186 cases, representing 2,4% of neoplasms in men. In spite of a high probability of cure, 299 deaths ensued.
Purpose: to interpret experiences by men with testicular cancer.
Methods: a qualitative study based on a phenomenological hermeneutical approach in four men aged 19 to 25, having had the experience of suffering cancer. Data collection was based on in-depth interviews; the analysis was performed with the proposal by Krueger: transcription, coding, topics and subtopics building. Rigor criteria as proposed by Castillo, and ethical standards were applied.
Results: culture, education, and beliefs had an influence on the timely and effective detection; sexuality plays a significant role because of the emerging doubts on the sequelae after unilateral testicular removal, such as: fertility, sexual dysfunction, ejaculation, and libido.
Discussion/conclusion: in spite of a number of advances in the present century, genitality and sexuality are not yet clearly discussed due to existing sociocultural barriers. This fact interferes with nurse-patient relationship, which results in a need for professionals to have enough information to provide a high quality healthcare.
