Abstract

Objective: to assess the cases of phlebitis reported in a Brazilian hospital and the potential association of their categories with use of infusion drugs and catheter gauge.

Methods: a retrospective, cross-sectional study to evaluate 436 records of patients with phlebitis from January 2012 to December 2014. Patients’ characteristics and phlebitis features were evaluated; a Fisher's exact test was used to assess the association of phlebitis category with catheter gauge.

Results: 373 patients were treated for such adverse events over the study period; most of them were white, female, average age 59.3 years, with duration of stay being 10 days; 436 reports of phlebitis events were found in such patients.

Conclusion: Mean residence time for catheters was 2.27 days; most phlebitis events had a grade 2 severity and involved left higher limb; Among 436 assessed catheters, event occurrence was associated to diabetes (26%); in 243 cases an association of catheter gauge to phlebitis grade was found, with maximal association (28.4%) being found for 22-gauge catheter with grade 2 phlebitis. Furthermore, 96.2% of infusion drugs in 373 patients were antibiotics. Routine procedures and/or protocols are needed to ensure a higher surveillance for phlebitis and nursing practices, in order to avoid compromising the quality of health care.
