Abstract

Introduction: understood as an overall concept, stress refers to all circumstances that threaten the general well-being of an individual, altering his or her physical safety, self-esteem, reputation and tranquility. The challenges experienced by nursing students in a public university, as a full-time course, including the emotions experienced in the classroom and practice settings, can add several stressors and contribute negatively to the teaching-learning process.
Purpose: to describe the level of stress in nursing students at a public university.
Methods: a descriptive study based on a quantitative approach, conducted with students from the first to the fifth year of a nursing course, using the Evaluación del Estrés en Estudiantes de Enfermería scale (AEEE) (assessment of stress in nursing students) as a data collection instrument.
Findings: a total of 114 students participated in the study, predominantly women (90%), in the young age group (85.95%), single (90%), without children (96%), only studying (90%), living on an income of up to minimum wage (71%) and living with family or other people (74%). Variability of medium, high and very high scores in the stress factor intensity was found among six analysis domains.
Conclusion: the stress level among Brazilian nursing students, graduated from a public university, is a process that evolves in a diversified and increasing way through the successive years of the course.
