Abstract

Purpose: to identify the available evidence from scientific literature on the definition of the concept of spiritual distress in primary caregivers.
Methods: a literature review was carried out in the databases PubMed (NCBI), Scielo virtual library, Science Direct and Google Scholar; articles less than five years old were considered; and the descriptors “spiritual distress”, “sufrimiento espiritual”, and “angustia espiritual” were used, among others.
Findings: a total of 450 articles were found, and 19 of them were selected for analysis. Spiritual distress is generally described in terms of the absence of spirituality, as a synonym of spiritual discomfort or spiritual pain, as well as in terms of assistance interventions by various health professionals.
Conclusions: this phenomenon of spirituality is widely explored in nursing. Once the vast literature that has defined this concept is understood, it is necessary to consider ways to develop specific and unique interventions for the care of spiritual suffering. This should be done not only in aspects of chronicity and death, but also in the daily field of professional practice: under specific theoretical references to address the phenomenon of caring for the human health experience.
