Abstract

Introduction: obesity is defined as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation, which can be damaging and harmful for health. In the search for an effective alternative treatment, peptide hormones such as the peptide YY (a3-36) have been studied for their potential effect on energy intake regulation and impact on appetite.
Objective: to analyse the anorectic effects of the peptide YY (a3-36) as obesity treatment.
Methodology: a literature search was conducted in five databases: PubMed (NCBI), Cochrane Library, BVS, WorldWideScience.org and Microsoft Academic. The MeSH terms used in the search were: “péptido YY” (peptide YY) y (AND) “obesidad” (obesity), and the publication period was between 2015 and 2020.
Results: the English language prevailed among articles. Six articles were found in PubMed, two in Cochrane Library, four in BVS, one in WorldWideScience.org, and two in Microsoft Academic; nine of them were clinical trials, three trials conducted in rats and the rest in human beings, from adolescents to adults.
Conclusions: higher levels of peptide YY (a3-36), either through administration or secretion stimulation, have demonstrated their efficacy for the obesity reduction. Clinical trial results are promising; however, more studies are required to become a driving factor in their application in human beings, and particularly in the paediatric population.
