Abstract

Objective: to identify the level of family functionality among university students from a public school in Southern Veracruz.
Methodology: a descriptive and cross-sectional study; the sample included 259 students with non-probability convenience sampling. For conducting this study, a personal data questionnaire was used, as well as the Family APGAR instrument (Gabriel Smilkstein, 1978), which describes the perception of family members of their overall functioning level at a specific time.
Results: the age range was from 17 to 30 years, with 20 as mean age; most participants were women and single. Regarding family functionality, the majority (65.3%) presented family dysfunction in its different dimensions, while 34.7% presented normal functionality, and 21.5% of adolescents presented severe dysfunction. Both genders were found to present normal functionality; however, women presented higher severe dysfunction with 18.7%.
Conclusion: the majority of university students presented family dysfunction in any of its different levels, and therefore it is required to implement mental health programs in order to achieve psychological and social wellbeing among university students.
