Abstract

Introduction: a research was conducted about the social relevance of training on Psychological First Aid (PFA) for military nurses. The PFA describes a human response of help for victims in disaster and emergency situations. (1-3). Previous research (4) has shown that military nurses presented higher empathy and use of motor behaviour strategies than volunteers (firemen, civil defence and Red Cross), and they were more efficient for providing this help.
Objective: to analyse the social relevance perceived by students from the Colegio Militar de la Nación (National Military School) about PFA in their training and for their future performance.
Methodology: a quali-quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted. There was training on PFA, and a question-naire developed ad hoc was administered to all the student population from the Nursing Degree of the Colegio Militar de la Nación (n= 88).
Results: 100% of the students considered that training on PFA was relevant for their professional activity in different settings; they also evaluated positively the development of attitudes for working on emergencies and stress situations.
Conclusions: PFA is perceived as relevant by Military Nursing students who are oriented towards Emergency Medicine. Although this study must be replicated with other populations, and there must be an extension regarding its link with choice of career, it would be interesting to include training on PFA within nursing training.
