Abstract

Objective: to compare the levels of happiness and family interaction among Portuguese nurses working at the hospital and Primary Care settings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Method: a descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional study, conducted on a convenience sample of 468 Portuguese nurses working at the hospital and Primary Care settings. During March and April 2021, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, sociodemographic and professional questionnaires were administered, as well as the Portuguese version of the Work-Home Interaction Survey and the Job Satisfaction Brief Scale. Data were digitally collected and treated using the IBM-SPSS program version® 26.0. There was approval by the Healthcare Ethics Committee and authorization by the health units involved.
Results: the mean scores for positive family interaction tend to be higher among nurses working at hospitals, and among Primary Care nurses regarding happiness at work. No statistical relevance was found between both samples. The commitment and emotional-organizational commitment presented higher average levels in both samples than satisfaction at work.
Conclusions: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses was shown in general in the balance in their work-family interaction. The higher levels obtained in this sample of nurses for commitment and emotional-organizational commitment vs. satisfaction at work could be associated with the engagement, activity and energy of these professionals, either due to their connection to the profession or to their commitment for facing the pandemic challenges.
