Abstract

Objective: to describe the options for local treatment of scald burns in paediatric patients.
Methodology: a scoping review through bibliographic search in PubMed from January 2020 to July 2022, including original articles with participants of paediatric age. The search terms were “scald burn” AND “treatment” AND “children” NOT “adult”. Data from the articles selected were collected and structured into analysis tables, and their methodology quality was assessed, with scores of Poor, Moderate-Good, and Excellent.
Results: eight articles were identified: six studies with retrospective design and two randomized clinical trials. The quality of the controlled intervention studies was Moderate-Good, in contrast to the cohort one, observational and cross-sectional studies, which was Excellent. In seven out of the eight studies, more than one treatment option was used; the most widely used were dressings in 75%, mostly hydrofibre, hydrocolloid, polyurethane dressings and collagens; the rest were grafts and topical antimicrobial agents (silver sulfadiazine).
Conclusion: few studies were found regarding treatment for scald burns in paediatric patients; what was found in this review was the use of dressings, grafts, and topical antimicrobial agents. Regardless of the variety of options documented, no protocol for topical approach was found in developing countries.
