Abstract

Objectives: to explore the perspectives of nurses and physicians in the intensive care units of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona regarding nurse prescribing sedation and analgesia.

Methods: a descriptive and exploratory qualitative study based on thematic content analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using a semi-structured interview guide. A sample of 11 participants was selected using purposive non-probability sampling.

Results: nurse prescribing of sedation and analgesia is recognized as an opportunity to optimize patient follow-up and as a strategy that could contribute to reducing complications arising from poor pain management and under- or over-sedation. However, adequate training and experience must be ensured to guarantee patient safety at all times.

Conclusions: nurses' proximity to patients and their experience in sedation and analgesia are the main strengths identified. Despite this, its implementation is contingent upon the need to ensure adequate training and experience to guarantee patient safety. Additionally, the lack of legal support and resistance from some professionals could be threatening factors in implementation. No substantive differences were identified in the perceptions of either group.
