Abstract

Clinical safety is a current issue with great impact, but not one that has just recently appeared. The first studies that researched this topic date back to the 50s. Transfusion safety must be included within the aspects that clinical safety encompasses. Starting in the 90s, there was a growing concern for safer transfusions. This article describes the different problems encountered in relation to blood transfusion, commenting on aspects related to identification errors (of samples and patients), as well as possible solutions provided and the role that nurses can occupy out in this process. One of these roles is the nurse in charge of hemosurveillance, a role which is already being carried out in some neighboring countries and which enables the development of a new professional dimension, in accordance with the guidelines of the highly experienced nurse. The objetive of these practices is to ensure safe and cost-effective healthcare delivery.
