Abstract
Proper control of the airway has enabled great progress in intensive care. In addition, the use of an artificial airway is part of the patient’s care during the surgical procedure and postoperative period.
The laryngeal mask (LM) has been introduced as part of the devices used for difficult airway management. It is very easy to use, but experience is still the most important requirement for use in patients with airway complications. The insertion of the LM is a technique that requires the nurse’s collaboration, both in the insertion procedure and in the monitoring and follow-up care that the patient will require subsequently.
This project aims to contribute to nurses’ knowledge on the use of this artificial airway, since education and training are essential for reducing risks in the patient, as well as for early detection of complications and their proper treatment.
This article describes the insertion technique for the laryngeal mask, available types and their indications, as well as the material required to carry out the insertion and the nursing collaboration interventions during and after insertion.
