Abstract

Jellyfish are invertebrate marine animals with little mobility that are transported by ocean currents.  Their composition is 95% water and thus they are easily camouflaged.  Skin contact with their tentacles causes skin itching (urticary).  The climate change that has been taking place on the planet for the past few years has led to an increase in sea temperature, which in turn has triggered considerable growth of jellyfish populations during the summer season.
There are many popular treatment options for jellyfish stings, such as applying vinegar, alcohol-iodine or povidone-iodine, alcohol, ammonia, hydrocortisone pomade or anti-inflammatory creams.
Our several years of experience, as well as the content of consulted publications, suggests the use of 10% povidone-iodine as an effective antiseptic option in the treatment of lesions caused by jellyfish stings.
This work aims to describe the nursing intervention that is carried out in our centre when we are faced with jellyfish stings and to propose the use of 10% povidone-iodine as the antiseptic solution of choice.
