Abstract

The recognition of the nursing profession as an academically university regulated healthcare career provides legitimacy to the professional practice in all action scopes and facilitates the development of new profiles of nursing specialists. The transformation of nursing studies into a university grade paves the way (something which did not exist until now) for the nurse to reach a complete academic development with legitimate recognition for a research capacity.
The purpose of this paper is to provide information on the current state of development regarding nursing specialities in general, highlighting the importance and complexity of the work being carried out by the National Commissions of the seven foreseen specialities introduced by the new legislation,  which have an impact on the concepts and definitions of an academic unit, an academic commission and a resident tutorship.
