Abstract

The appearance of new drugs to treat people with AIDS in the lastyears has allowed the patients with this illness to improve their qualityof life and survival. But it also raises new dares to patients and healthworkers: treatment adherence is one of the fundamental pillars tomake better the efficiency of this pharmacological arsenal. This studyhas been done with qualitative methodology to collect patients´perception about the factors influencing the pharmacologicaladherence. The setting was the General Hospital “Gregorio Marañon”at Madrid, specifically, the places where people with AIDS is beingattended: wards, day hospital and clinics. The analysis of the focusgroups showed information about some factors that influencepharmacological adherence: quantity and adverse effects of drugs,difficulties to make compatible medical treatment with daily life ofpeople with AIDS, the quality of the information received and thehope about new therapies.
