Abstract
Maintaining their functional capability poses a difficult challenge for the elderly. However, it has been demonstrated that regular exercise by means of the so called "strength training", improve considerably the musculo-skeletal physiological aging process. The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge of the nursing staff at the Traumatology Department of "Hospital Ntra. Sra. De Candelaria" in Santa Cruz de Tenerife regarding strength or endurance training in old age. This descriptive study was conducted using a survey self-elaborated using the R-SIGMA statistical programme. 100% of the nursing professionals found that exercise was beneficial for the elderly, although 80% was not familiarised with the concept of "strength training" and had no specific training regarding physical exercise in old age.
