Abstract

Objective: to assess the performance rate of Nursing staff in a Medical Oncology hospital department and the availability of resources versus demand by nursing category, shift and day, as well as the identification of nursing staff’s level of satisfaction regarding the services it receives from certain services within its healthcare delivery work.
Material and Method: descriptive study conducted in a Medical Oncology hospital department, which is considered an intermediate care service due to the type of services offered and the severity of its cases, with patients admitted during the week when data collection was performed (May 5-11 2008). By measuring in 24 hour sequences, each day of a hospitalized patient is considered a new stay, taking into account the total number of stays and not patients when performing data analysis. A total of 128 stays were analysed. The measurement instrument was the Proyect Research Nursing (PRN). In order to measure the degree of satisfaction of the nursing staff with respect to general services and services they use in their daily healthcare delivery work, a closed answer survey was administered.
Results: direct care accounted for 77,36% of the total care delivered and indirect care for 12,88%. 9,76% were related with administrative activities. The majority of time was dedicated to technical care (56,14%), with a mean total of 110,46 minutes per patient and day. The median time dedicated to delivered care was 202 minutes (19-560 range) per patient and day. By professional category, nurses conducted a higher percentage of activity in mobilization (70,9%), hygiene (72,4%) and elimination (50,1%). In feeding care, distribution is greater in nurses (81,2%), the same as in relation, education (79,8%) and technical care: respiratory (90,0%), diagnostic means (87,1%) and treatment (99,3%). The level of satisfaction in regards to the services received presents dysfunctions in some cases as a result of the organizational management of the fields assessed.
Conclusions: the main contributions of this study involve the identification and quantification of the time required by care demands, versus available resources, which could be useful for the qualitative adjustment of nursing staff in the service and for the management of the nursing staff needed by shift and day.
