Abstract
Objective: to determine the level of knowledge acquired by future parents after a group intervention on neonatal care.
Methods: we conducted a study with a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test in the Primary Care Center Viladecans 1 (Barcelona). The participants were all future fathers and mothers who attended pre-natal courses from december 2006 to november 2007. The educational intervention consisted of a four-hour workshop in which pediatric nurses at the health center discussed with the parent group basic aspects of childcare, physiological aspects of the newborn, danger signs and signs of alarm, and neonatal care. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire prepared ad hoc by the researchers, which included parental demographic variables and questions on the knowledge on the same issues addressed in the workshop, and an overall assessment questionnaire about the workshop. We performed a descriptive analysis of all variables.
Results: a total of 52 pre-post intervention questionnaires and 55 valid questionnaires were collected, from a total of 72 study subjects. 76,9% (40) were women. In the knowledge questionnaire, the median of correct answers in the pre-test was 4 (min. 0-max. 5) and in the post-test it was 10 (min. 5-max. 10). 83,6% (46) of the participants gave the workshop a score of 8-10, while 94,6% (52) highlighted its usefulness and 95,5% (53) the interest generated.
Conclusions: future mothers/fathers reached a level of adequate knowledge on the physiological aspects, signs of alarm and general care of the newborn to care for their future baby.
