Abstract

The school environment is a higher-risk realm for the transmission of infectious diseases due mainly to certain characteristics of the student body, such as their age and the group relations dynamic. Dealing with infection and the transmission thereof will be the pivotal point around which the care provided by a school nurse revolves, by taking action on the source of infection, the mechanisms of transmission and the susceptible individuals.
The key factor for preventing infectious diseases will be health education focused on the different groups comprising the school population (students, educational community and family) by stressing the school nurse being seen as a resource for working as a team regarding scheduling health education into the course curriculum.
This article, which deals with school nurses in view of infectious and arasitic diseases, is the fifth in a series of nine articles aimed at making this emerging nursing profile known.
