Abstract

Objective: to find out scientific evidence regarding whether diet education for patients with chronic renal impairment will reduce their interdialytic weight gain compared with those patients who don’t receive said education.
Method: a scientific literature review has been conducted through a bibliographic search in the most important databases on Health Sciences, and in databases with specific Nephrology articles. Besides, systematic reviews have been evaluated with the CARE tool, clinical practice guidelines with Agree II, and articles based on the fact of showing statistically significant results.
Results and conclusions: there are two main results associated with the question. On one hand, those data collected lead to the conclusion that diet education conducted by multidisciplinary groups will have a positive effect on patients and families, regarding treatment and diet compliance, as well as in the self-management of the chronic condition. However, on the other hand, in those documents found, no conclusive answer has been obtained to the question of whether there would be an improvement in interdialytic weight gain; that is to say, neither in clinical practice guidelines, nor in articles or systematic reviews. However, a systematic review was found, which had taken into account two articles which reached the conclusion that the intervention had reduced interdialytic weight gain; but this conclusion does not appear in the systematic review, and therefore it has been estimated that possibly those articles did not have enough evidence. And that is the reason why no reference is made in this article.
