Abstract
Objective: to assess the Quality of Life (QoL) in patients with Chronic Cardiac Failure (CCF) within a Cardiac Failure Unit (CFU), and to assess any association with clinical factors.
Method: transversal descriptive study with 87 CCF patients from the CFU in the “Complejo Asistencial Universitario de León”. In order to measure QoL, the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) Questionnaire was used. Comparison of variables was conducted with t-Student test. In order to assess the independent association between different dimensions and variables, multiple linear regression models were built.
Results: the mean age of the studied subjects was 71.3 years, with a prevalence of male patients (70.6%), non-ischemic etiology (57.6%), New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classes III-IV (52.9%), and systolic CF (82.4%). The mean QoL score in the Physical Summary Component (PSC) was 33.2, and 48.9 in the Mental Summary Component (MSC). In multivariate analysis: for PSC, a NYHA III-IV functional class and a non-ischemic etiology worsened QoL in its physical component; the mental component of QoL got worse with diastolic CF and non-ischemic etiology.
Conclusions: the perception of QoL in CCF patients is significantly altered in all dimensions. A worse functional class and non-ischemic etiology were independently associated with a higher deterioration of QoL in its physical dimensions, and diastolic CF and non-ischemic etiology were associated with a higher deterioration in emotional dimensions. Etiology is the variable with a higher impact in all domains.
