Abstract

The Spanish Healthcare System faces two major challenges: efficacy and sustainability. In order to address them with guarantees, a change in the way to manage healthcare has become essential. The Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit is one of the hospital units with the highest number of complaints by patients, together with Surgery and waiting lists; therefore, improving the quality of care for pregnant women has become the primary objective of midwives. In this article, the Lean Healthcare methodology is presented as a management model that intends to achieve continuous improvement focused on the concept of value for patients, the promotion of the abilities of healthcare professionals, and the removal of any waste or lack of efficiency in the unit, in order to improve the satisfaction of pregnant women in the new healthcare setting.
