Abstract

Objective: to assess the acquisition of knowledge self-reported after the implementation of a training session for mothers and fathers on the care required by newborns and pre-term newborns at discharge from the Neonatology Unit.
Method: a quasi-experimental before-and-after study, conducted at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de León. The intervention consisted in a training session for fathers and mothers on newborn (NB) and pre-term newborn (PTNB) care, evaluated by a knowledge questionnaire prepared ad hoc and self-administered before and after, which included sociodemographical variables. Contrast hypothesis tests were used for paired samples, Student’s t test was used to assess any differences between means, and the non-parametric Mann Whitney U Test was applied when distributions did not follow a normal pattern. Spearman’s Correlation Analysis was conducted in order to evaluate the association between quantitative variables. The significance level used was p< 0.05.
Results: overall, 44 questionnaires were completed (22 before and 22 after). There was a statistically significant increase in self-reported knowledge on the 21 items assessed; 86% (n= 19) of the participants used internet as source of information about care. The training session was considered useful in all cases for the acquisition of strategies for NB ad PTNB care.
Conclusions: conducting a training session for mothers and fathers by Paediatric Nurses in a Neonatology Unit increased the level of knowledge self-reported by parents about care for their babies; they perceived it as useful and recommendable to others.
