Abstract

Objective: to understand the user’s perception of the quality of care received from nurses at a general hospital, and to identify the factors with impact on results about the perception of quality of care.
Method: a descriptive transversal study conducted with patients hospitalized in the medical and surgical units of a general hospital. A questionnaire validated into Spanish, known as Care-Q, was used for this study: it measures the perception by patients of Nursing Care quality, through 46 items included in six sub-scales: “Accessible”, “Explains and facilitates”, “Comforts”, “Anticipates”, “Trusting relationship” and “Monitors and follows through”. A descriptive and bivariate analysis was conducted, using frequencies, means and standard deviation (SD), with statistical significance if p< 0.05.
Results: the sample consisted of 54 patients: 28 hospitalized in the medical ward (51.85%) and 26 in the surgical ward (48.15%). Their mean age (SD) was 65.75 (17.27) years; 48.15% (26) were male and 51.85% (28) female. Their mean stay (SD) was of 5.79 (5.01) days. In terms of care perception, “Accessible” was the dimension that reached the highest score, while “Explains and facilitates” had the lowest score. No differences were observed in sub-scales regarding the subject profiles. There was only a more satisfactory result in the sub-scale “Comforts” in patients with surgical vs. medical hospitalization, with a statistically significant difference (p< 0.05).
Conclusions: the highest perception of patients regarding Nursing care quality is focused on the professional conducts associated with closeness and proximity, and the scientific-technical aspect of nursing care. Differences were detected in the perception of care quality which were associated with the type of Nursing Unit.
