Abstract

Several studies appear to confirm that the rest and sleep pattern is altered during the hospital stay. Many factors are involved in the altered sleep pattern of the hospitalised patient. These factors can be divided into two main groups: internal and external.
Objective: to determine how well hospitalised patients sleep and to identify what factors, in the patients´ opinions, make their rest and sleep difficult.
Material and methods: a descriptive study was conducted on adult patients hospitalised in general units using a self-designed questionnaire that compiled data on the difficulties perceived to sleep and to rest and the internal and external factors associated with such ability.
Results: 249 patients were studied, 45% of which (111) had difficulty to sleep whilst in hospital and 35% (87) experienced difficulties to sleep in their own house. Factors deriving from the health problem and surroundings affect sleep patterns the most, followed by those relating to comfort and nursing care.
