Abstract

Introduction: type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a public health issue due to its high mortality rate and complications that can be prevented with lifestyle changes; T2D affects the whole family, and care is needed to help metabolic control, with the T2D patient and primary caregiver being the main care providers. The experience of living with T2D leads to feelings that establish the process of adaptation and adjusting.

Purpose: to investigate the experience, feelings and ways to implement the process of adaptation and adjusting in a family with T2D.

Methods: a descriptive study aimed at understanding and interpreting the experience of T2D based on data reported by subjects themselves explaining the phenomenon results in a theory development. A preliminary sample included four informants suffering T2D. Data collection was based on semi-structured interviews.

Results: most informants were adults and older adults with a primary level of education and married. Interviews' analysis showed the following categories: adaptation to the disease, adjusting, and looking for solutions. Such categories include implied feelings ap- pearing in people with T2D and caregivers during the disease.

Conclusion: experience and feelings in people with T2D and their families are crucial in adaptation and adjusting processes, because they contribute to the understanding of the roles they play.
