Abstract

Introduction: nurses spend more time in contact with patients and relatives, and share a variety of feelings; therefore, it is required to be prepared based on the perception acquired during patient management in palliative care.
Objective: To identify the perception of nurses about palliative care targeted to terminal oncology patients.
Methodology: a qualitative and exploratory study conducted with five nurses in the Palliative Care Unit of a public hospital. The interview was conducted with a tool that collects sociodemographical data, and with questions to guide the study. It took place between January and February, 2013, and it was analyzed with content analysis, using the IRAMUTEQ software.
Results: three categories were identified: palliative care: perception in professional and personal life, split into two sub-categories (improving patients’ quality of life in terms of pain, and reducing the suffering of relatives, and communication and appreciation of life); palliative care: modification of thoughts and behaviours in the nursing team, and need for training on patient care.
Conclusion: the participants perceived the importance of being close to patients at the end of their lives; their activity is relevant in terms of improving quality of life and reducing their suffering.
