Abstract

Introduction: motivation is a prevailing agent to enhance personal development in any area when success in a task depends on motivation levels. In particular, in the academic area, motivation is very important in achieving a good performance. Purpose: to assess motivation type and perception on academic performance in nursing students at Chile’s Autonomous University. Methods: data were collected through a survey on academic motivation that was administered to 104 nursing students in Chile's Autonomous University. Questions were intended to relate intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to good grades. Mean and standard deviation data for the score in each item were analyzed. Results: extrinsic motivation level was 5.47±0.92 and intrinsic motivation was 5.80±0.89. Perception of academic performance was 4.9. Conclusion: nursing students are thought to have an extrinsic motivation to achieve high academic performance.
