Abstract

Purpose: to analyze factors affecting breastfeeding use in female students.
Methods: an integrative literature review using databases LILACS, IBECS and MEDLINE, from January to February 2015. The following inclusion criteria were used: indexation period 2004 to 2014; dealing with breastfeeding and students; and available in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.
Results: eleven papers fulfilling inclusion criteria were selected. Most studies used a descriptive approach (97%); a convenience sample was used in all investigations (100%). MEDLINE was the database that included the highest number of papers (100%). Major factor interfering breastfeeding in students are lack of psychosocial support, lack of legal regulation to guarantee timetable flexibility; and lack of structure in educational sites.
Conclusion: a maternal effort to use breastfeeding was found; however, it appears to be fragile due to the students' environment pressures. The reconciliation of breastfeeding and student life depends on a support network and the specific possibility for a woman to use it.
