Abstract

Introduction: to recover some elements of the methodological path that reaffirmed the process of knowledge being generated in the doctoral thesis " Building the Care Provided by Nursing Professionals in the First Level of Care in Uruguay: a Cultural Approach". The challenge for this article is to objectively describe the path of the research through the narration of details and the concern to understand the care environments, based on the interface of the nursing profession.
Method: the development of the method was based on the lives and experiences of the main actors, i.e. nursing professionals: retirees, teachers; as well as on the performance of the role through interaction with the community, linked to the first level of care. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and observation of participants.
Results: tindings reflect the processes of the interviews and observation of participants, and show the expressions, the symbols, and the development of the role that is shared by a culture.
On the other hand, since its birth as a profession, Nursing has been building care, by assimilating human contents to its specific knowledge, and adapting them to different sociocultural settings.
Conclusion: it is concluded that, using a qualitative methodology and a focused ethnographic approach, with a non-linear historical perspective, the building of Nursing Care in the First Level of Care in Uruguay could be understood. Ethnography allowed the author meeting people and evoking their memories, thoughts, feelings. This was reinforced with the perception of actions, through the confrontation with professional life without trying to frame or evaluate them.
