Abstract

Introduction: existing evidence shows that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), as the risk of cardiovascular mortality is two to four times higher in people with diabetes than in those without this chronic condition.
Purpose: to describe the current evidence on smoking, overweight, obesity, and cardiovascular risk in adults with T2D.
Methods: this is an integrative review of the literature based on EBSCOhost, PUBMED and Google Scholar databases. The following descriptors were used: type 2 diabetes, smoking, overweight, obesity, and cardiovascular risk.
Results: a total of 17 studies were selected and analyzed, including seven descriptive cross-sectional studies, two cohort studies, two prospective correlational studies, two retrospective correlational studies, two randomized clinical trials, and two systematic reviews with meta-analysis.
Conclusion: the importance of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in people with DT2 is now well known; however, implementation of intervention strategies to reduce smoking, overweight, obesity, and cardiovascular risk in adults with DT2 is still limited.

Keywords:
