Abstract

Objective: to summarize the information available regarding the barriers preventing the use of contraceptive methods among women of childbearing age.

Methodology: an integrative review of literature was conducted in the following databases: PubMed (NCBI), SCOPUS, EBSCO and Springer Link, using the terms “perceived barriers”, “contraceptive methods”, and “contraceptive behaviour”, and considering articles published within the last five years.

Results: over 200 articles were retrieved, and only 23 were included for analysis. Results were classified into Personal Barriers, where lack of knowledge was identified as the main barrier for using contraceptive methods, Interpersonal Barriers, highlighting the stigma which affects mostly adolescents and young women, and Organizational Barriers associated with the distrust by women towards the staff providing family planning care.

Conclusion: once the barriers for the use of contraceptive methods is summarized, it will be easier to identify the problem preventing women from reaching their ideal contraceptive goals.
