Abstract

Introduction: the current COVID-19 pandemic has generated an excess demand for high-efficacy N95-type ventilators, and the decision to reuse them after a decontamination process, with limited knowledge about the effect on the fit factor of ventilators.

Objective: to summarize the scientific evidence on the quantitative fit factor of N95 ventilators after being subject to decontamination processes using hydrogen peroxide, moist heat, and ultraviolet light.

Methodology: a systematic review of clinical trials, using the PRISMA P methodology and PICO format to define the research question and key terms. Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (Mesh) were incorporated, with Boolean operators AND OR. The sources consulted were EBSCO, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, Redalyc, Oxford, MedRixv, NCBI, Cinhal and Lilacs. After collection, there was bibliographic review as well as critical reading using the SIGN 50 tool (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network), in order to determine the level of evidence and degree of recommendation for every study selected.

Results: the initial search generated 798 results, which were reduced to 55 when the summary was considered; and finally, each study was fully read, inclusion and exclusion criteria were identified, and eight studies were selected.

Conclusions: the three methods can be effective to maintain the qualitative fit of ventilators; however, this depends on the models of the ventilators used and the number of decontamination cycles conducted.
