Accessibility to this care has been affected by the training of professionals in the health area, evidencing a need to update this knowledge from the nursing discipline. Objective: yo propose a concept of palliative care in nursing professionals and students in the department of Quindío through grounded theory. Materials and Method: the grounded theory is developed from data systematically obtained through focus groups made up of undergraduate students and nursing professionals from the department of Quindío. Results: the analysis of focus groups, conducted with ATLAS.ti, identified 23 emerging codes on palliative care (PC), such as “integral care”, “training in PC” and “quality of life”. These data led to the creation of a grounded theory focused on the holistic approach. Conclusion: this study highlights the need for specialized palliative care training, and it also identifies the relationship between professional training and access barriers for addressing patients´ physical, psycho-emotional, social, and spiritual needs. It is concluded that undergraduate education in palliative care is insufficient, and that professional training should be strengthened to improve access and the quality of care.
