Abstract

Purpose: To identify theoretical and teaching tools used for reflexive thinking development in first steps of  nursing learning.
Methods: An integral review based on nursing journals 2005-2011 was carried out. Literature search was based on the Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (LILACS, IBECS, MEDLINE and Cochrane Scielo). Key words to find publications were reflexión and pensamiento reflexivo as well as the English terms for them (reflection and reflexive thinking).
Results: No consensus could be found on reflexive thinking in nursing. Most authorities use the Donald Schön approach as a reference. Most commonly cited educational activities when developing reflexive thinking were: evidence-based nursing, portfolio, journal/journaling, reflexive diaries, written narratives and guided reflection.
Conclusion: There is a need for an improved definition of reflection thinking and for deeper studies to evaluate the consequences of reflexive thinking in nursing, so that nurses are able to act and think about their actions and improve them.
